Withnoelectricityfromthegrid,norunningwaterandnomunicationwiththeoutsideworld,allthevolunteershavetoworkwitharetheirskillsandwhatevertoolsandsuppliestheycanscavengefromtheirsurroundings. Expertsfromthefieldsofhomelandsecurity,engineeringandpsychologyhavehelpeddesigntheworldofTheColonytoreflectelementsfrombothreal-lifedisastersandmodelsofwhatthefuturecouldlooklikeafteraglobalviraloutbreak. Overthecourseofthe10-weekexperiment,theColonistsmustworktogethertobuildthenecessitiesofsurvival,suchasawater-filtrationsystem,abatterybankthatpoweredtheirelectricity,asolarcooker,ashowersystemandagreenhouse–andevensomeniceties(acoffeemakebbb!).
